Pantone has announced Ultra Violet as its Color of the Year for 2018, but just who are the experts that make this decision each December?
Pantone got its start in 1963. Founder Lawrence Herbert created a system for identifying, matching and communicating colors for consistency across the print and textile design industries. His initial work led to the Pantone Matching System, a book that standardized colors across these fields.
Purple has ancient associations with power and royalty. We also associate it with the mysterious — the cosmos, mysticism, and counterculture. Think of Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix, alternative icons who favored this brilliant hue.
Ultra Violet-inspired gemstones include amethyst and tanzanite.
